DHEC chooses current board member as new director
After months of deliberation, the S.C. Board of Health and Environmental Control has made a selection for a new director of DHEC.
Rick Toomey, a graduate of Duke University with a background in health administration, was selected by the board out of a pool of over 130 candidates.
Toomey is a current member of the S.C. Board of Health and Environmental Control, representing Congressional District 1.
The decision, which is subject to approval from Gov. Henry McMaster and the S.C. Senate, was announced in a press release on DHEC’s website on Thursday, Dec. 20.
DHEC has been without a permanent director for well over a year. David Wilson is the current Acting Director of DHEC, a position he has held since August 2017.
DHEC directors serve four-year terms after being appointed.
“Dr. Toomey’s years of leadership experience in the health care industry, coupled with his in-depth familiarity with DHEC make him uniquely qualified to lead the Department as it continues its current positive path forward,” said Board Charmain Mark Elam in the press release.
Toomey’s biography, which was included in the release, lists his previous job experience as the CEO of Beaufort Memorial Hospital and CEO of Nash Health Care Systems among his credentials.
