No. 12 La. Tech Beats Penn State 87-84
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) _ Amber Obaze hit a 35-footer with 1.2 seconds left to give No. 12 Louisiana Tech an 87-84 victory over No. 6 Penn State on Sunday, ending the Lady Lions’ 24-game home winning streak.
Jess Strom’s 3-pointer with 8 seconds left tied the game at 82-82, but Obaze took the inbounds pass and dribbled to about 8 feet from the right hash mark before putting up a desperation jumper that gave Tech (7-1) the lead.
Erica Smith-Taylor fouled Tanisha Wright on the inbounds pass, sending the Lady Lions (7-2) to the free throw line with 1.1 seconds left. Wright made the first free throw, then missed the second, putting the rebound in play and giving the Lady Lions a chance to tie with a tip-in.
But a lane violation on the second free throw forced Wright to shoot it again. This time, Wright banked it in, leaving Penn State down 85-84 and giving the ball back to Tech.
Kelly Mazzante was called for an intentional foul on the inbounds, and Tasha Crain hit both free throws to make it 87-84. Tech then inbounded the ball and ran out the clock.
Amisha Carter had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Techsters, and Erica Smith-Carter also scored 17 points. Obaze, Crain and Trina Frierson each had 14.
Mazzante scored 29 points, Wright had 19 and Strom 16 for the Lady Lions.
Wright scored the first five points in an 11-0 Penn State run that gave the Lady Lions a 48-43 lead about 4 minutes into the second half.
But the Lady Techsters inched their way back, taking a 60-59 lead on Tiffany Thompson’s inside jumper. Neither team led by more than five points in the second half.
Louisiana Tech’s speed and pressure defense flustered Penn State in the first half. The Lady Techsters held Penn State without a field goal for almost 5 minutes midway through the half, allowing Tech to take a 29-20 lead on two free throws by Carter.
Tech led 41-35 at halftime.
