Experts question coroner’s finding that woman died from THC

June 11, 2019

LAPLACE, La. (AP) — Experts are questioning a coroner’s finding that a Louisiana woman died from an excess amount of THC.

News outlets report St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner Christy Montegut announced last week that the active ingredient in marijuana caused the death of a woman in LaPlace.

That’s despite a police report saying the woman’s boyfriend told officers she recently was treated for a chest infection.

The coroner said THC impacts breathing and enough of it could cause respiratory failure. Montegut says she had no other drugs in her system and no signs of disease.

But the National Institute on Drug Abuse says there’s never been an adult death attributed to THC.

Experts say that if excessive marijuana consumption was so toxic, thousands would be dying each year.
