How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Monday
U.S. stocks are closed sharply lower Monday, sending the Dow Jones industrial average down more than 588 points and pulling the Standard & Poor’s 500 index more than 10 percent off its recent high.
The slump was part of a global wave of selling triggered by increased signs of an economic slowdown in China.
For the day:
The Dow lost 588.40 points, or 3.6 percent, to 15,871.35.
The S&P 500 index dropped 77.68 points, or 3.9 percent, to 1,893.21.
The Nasdaq composite fell 179.79 points, or 3.8 percent, to 4,526.25.
For the year:
The Dow is down 1,951.72 points, or 11 percent.
The S&P 500 index is down 165.69 points, or 8.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 209.81 points, or 4.4 percent.
