OU football: Baker Mayfield’s top five games at Oklahoma

December 10, 2017 GMT

Here’s a look at Baker Mayfield’s best games as a Sooner:

1. OU 31, Tennessee 24, 2 OT (Sept. 12, 2015)

Lincoln Riley learned what type of quarterback he had when Mayfield guided the visiting Sooners back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Mayfield, in his second game at Oklahoma, tied the game with two touchdown passes in the final 8:20, added a scoring run on fourth down in the first overtime and hit Sterling Shepard with the eventual game-winning 18-yard pass in the second overtime. Mayfield was 19-of-39 for 187 yards and willed OU to a victory.

2. OU 62, Oklahoma State 52 (Nov. 4, 2017)

In what turned out to be an elimination game for the Big 12 championship and a College Football Playoff berth, Mayfield set a school record with 598 passing yards and added five touchdown passes in the road triumph. The offense ended with 785 yards, which is their second-highest offensive total since 1988. Mayfield likely clinched the Heisman Trophy with this performance.

3. OU 31, Ohio State 16 (Sept. 9, 2017)

After romping past the No. 2 Buckeyes, Mayfield took a victory lap with an OU flag and ended his run by planting it in the middle of the “Block O” at the 50-yard line of Ohio Stadium. Oklahoma fans also had fun asking Apple’s Siri app “Who owns Ohio Stadium?” Siri would answer “It’s Baker Mayfield.” Mayfield threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns to give the team an early signature victory over the eventual Big Ten champion.

4. OU 66, Texas Tech 59 (Oct. 22, 2016)

Welcomed back to his first school by a student section wearing “Traitor” T-shirts, Mayfield threw for 545 yards and a school-record seven touchdowns in a game that featured an NCAA-record 1,708 combined yards between the schools (854 yards each). Mayfield finished his career going 3-0 against his former school.

5. OU 44, Baylor 34 (Nov. 14, 2015)

Oklahoma led 37-34 but Baylor had momentum during the key third-down play. Mayfield bought time and found Dimitri Flowers with a 7-yard pass with 4:47 remaining to seal the huge Big 12 road win over No. 4 Baylor. It snapped the Bears’ 20-game home winning streak. Mayfield was 24-of-34 passing for 270 yards.
