Knights’ Beverage breaks 60-foot mark in shot put

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Cabell Midland’s Gavin Beverage broke the 60-foot barrier in the shot put Friday with a throw of 62-feet, 9 inches at the Paul Wood Memorial track and field meet.

Cabell Midland coach Chris Parsons said Beverage has a chance this season to break the state meet record of 61-9 held by former U.S. Olympian Randy Barnes.

Beverage also placed first in the discus with a throw of 165-4.

Cabell Midland’s boys rolled to the meet title with 151 points. Runner-up Winfield scored 97 followed by Point Pleasant 66.50, Hurricane 59.50 and Huntington High 42.

Stevie Ball from Cabell Midland was first in the 300 hurdles (42.86 seconds) and Isaiah Davis won the 200 (24.51). The Knights also won the 4x800 (8:47.88), 4x100 (45.93) and 4x110 shuttle hurdles (1:05.29).


Jaylen Snyder of Hurricane was a double winner in the high jump (6-2) and long jump (20-3).

Winfield was the girls team winner with 156 points followed by Ripley 98, Hurricane 95.50, Cabell Midland 65 and Point Pleasant 54.

Anya Miller from Cabell Midland won the 1600 (5:21.46).

Hurricane had wins from Malia Sayavong in the 100 hurdles (16.62)and 4x200 (1:53.24).
