High court orders new trial for man convicted of murder

NORWICH, Conn. (AP) — The state Supreme Court has ordered a new trial for a Haitian immigrant who was convicted of killing a Connecticut woman in 2015.

The Norwich Bulletin reports the court ruled last week that Norwich Police violated 45-year-old Jean Jacques’ privacy. Jacques is serving a 60-year sentence for the stabbing of Casey Chadwick.

The appeal to the high court centered on whether police needed a warrant to enter Jacques’ apartment, days after his lease expired. Chadwick’s cellphone and drugs that Chadwick’s boyfriend had kept in her home were seized.

Prosecutors say Jacques was no longer living at the apartment and he made no attempt to have family members extend the lease.

Defense attorneys say Jacques was entitled to his privacy rights unless he said he was moving out or was evicted.
