UMaine System to offer free tuition to some students

ORONO, Maine (AP) — The University of Maine System has announced a new program that will allow some first-year students to attend school at its smaller campuses for free.

The program is available at the campuses in Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Augusta and Machias. It will begin in Fall 2018 and apply to Maine residents who are first-year, full-time students and who are eligible for a Pell Grant, a need-based subsidy from the federal government.

The students will use the money from the Pell Grant to pay as much as they can, and the schools will wipe out the rest of their tuition and fees.

The system says students will be required to take at least 30 credits each year and maintain a 2.0 GPA, although specific guidelines may vary by campus.
