C.J. McCollum capped his 32-point night by nailing a runner in the lane with 0.9 seconds left to give Portland a 114-113 win at Dallas. Damian Lillard dropped in 29 points and helped the Trail Blazers survive a wild finish that included six lead changes in the final minute.

The Atlanta Falcons have replaced outgoing offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan with former University of Washington and Southern California head coach Steve Sarkisian. The Falcons announced the hiring just a day after Shanahan left to become head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Sarkisian took over as Alabama’s offensive coordinator for last month’s national championship game, but his tenure with the Crimson Tide stunningly lasted only one contest.

LaMelo Ball, the younger brother of UCLA’s star freshman Lonzo Ball, scored 92 points, with 41 in the fourth quarter, to help Chino Hills, California beat Los Osos 146-123 last night. LaMelo Ball had only 29 points at halftime. He made 37-61 shots from the floor, including 7-22 from behind the three-point line, hit 11-14 free throws and had seven assists and five rebounds. The Ball’s other brother LiAngelo, who leads Chino Hills in scoring, sat out due to an ankle injury. LaMelo and LiAngelo are both committed to UCLA like their older brother Lonzo, who is projected to be a top-five pick in the 2017 NBA draft. Chino Hills, who is now 26-1, had won 60 straight games before losing to Oak Hill Academy last Saturday in which LaMelo scored 36 points.

A Grand Island Senior High School softball player has signed to play with Northeast Community College this fall. Coach Iris Woodhead said she has recruited Chandler Hehnke to join the Hawks in the fall of 2017. At Grand Island, Hehnke was a member of the softball team all four years and earned a number of honors, including a spot on the Heartland Athletic Academic All-Conference in her sophomore, junior and senior years, as well as Class ‘A’ Freshman Softball All State. Hehnke plans to play second base and pitcher for Northeast. Alayna Allen, of Columbus High School, also signed recently with the Hawks.
