UTRGV recruiter helps children build better future
Carlo Tamayo has convinced a lot of people to go to college.
And last Friday, he was doing just that at PorterEarlyCollegeHigh School.
Tamayo is associate director for recruiting and scholarships at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
A Brownsville native, Tamayo joined the then-University of Texas at Brownsville in 1996 after working for the Texas Workforce Commission, where he interacted with people who worked in higher education to provide training opportunities for unemployed workers.
“As I got to know members of the campus community and saw what they did, it kind of sparked a passion in me for higher ed,” Tamayo said.
While UTB is now UTRGV, Tamayo’s role remains much the same.
