Lake Havasu qualifies four wrestlers for state meet

February 3, 2019

BUCKEYE — Two Lake Havasu wrestlers won sectional titles and the Knights qualified four wrestlers for the state meet on Saturday at the Division III, Section III meet at Youngker High School.

“They did a great job,” Havasu coach Ryan Schuman said. “I’m very proud of the hard work they put in and what they’ve been able to accomplish.”

Senior Earle Parra continued his near flawless campaign, winning the 132-pound weight class for the second straight season.

It didn’t come easy, however, with Parra earning a pair of decisions in his final two matches, including a 6-3 win in the championship over Peoria’s Armando Valencia.

Junior Jared Thomas dominated the 160-pound class, earning pins in his first two matches, including a 48-seconds fall in the quarterfinals. He went the distance in the championship, but earned a 5-1 victory over Phoenix Washington’s Muzaffar Muzaffaro.

Kyler Green earned a third place finish at 113 pounds and sophomore Daniel Blalock wrestled back to a 3-2 decision in the consolation semifinals to eventually claim third place at 182 pounds and earn a spot at state.

“I think (Blalock) has like 35 matches for his whole life and he gets to go to state as a sophomore,” Schuman said.

One of the Knights expected to challenge for a medal at state this season, senior Rob Samsoe, had an abrupt end to his season, exiting the tournament after suffering a concussion in his opening match. Samsoe was ranked third in the division at 170 pounds after a sixth place finish at state last season.

“He came down on top of his head,” Schuman said. “I had to make the decision. It was the hardest decision of my life.”

The Knights’ only other wrestler, Cory Pellerin, lost in overtime in the semifinals at 152 pounds and was unable to recover to finish in the top four.

Yuma won the team title at the meet, more than doubling the score of second place Desert Edge. Lake Havasu finished in eighth.

The state meet is at the Findlay Toyota Center, the newly named Events Center in Prescott Valley, on Thursday and Friday.
