COLLEGE BASEBALL: Wabash Valley hammers Shawnee in GRAC doubleheader

MOUNT CARMEL – Wabash Valley swept a Great Rivers Athletic Conference doubleheader against Shawnee 10-0 in seven innings and 20-2 in five innings Sunday.

The No. 19-ranked Warriors (34-10, 15-3) trail GRAC-leading Olney Central (37-7, 17-2) by 1½ games after the Knights took both games of a league twin-bill aginst Southeastern Illinois on Sunday.

In Game 1, WVC pitcher Liam Jenkins (3-1) pitched a two-hit shutout for 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Alex Lee recorded the final two outs for the Warriors.

Wabash Valley backed Jenkins with a five-run first, a three-run fourth and single tallies in the fifth and seventh.

Luis Sanchez went 4-for-5 with four singles, three RBI and two runs to lead the Warriors’ offense. Jarrod Watkins (3-for-5) added three singles, one RBI and one run; Braden Giroux (3-for-5) had three singles, two RBI and two runs; Diego Pichardo (2-for-4) chipped in a single and double, one RBI and one run; Romeo Harris (2-for-3) and David Rodriguez (2-for-4) each contributed two singles and one run; Kobe Stephens (1-for-2) posted a single, one RBI and two runs. Collin Luty (single) and Michael Rodriguez (double) had one hit apiece.

In Game 2, WVC exploded with 14 runs in the second before tacking on a third-inning tally and five more runs in the fourth. Both Shawnee runs came in the third.

Twelve different Wabash Valley players had at least one hit in the Warriors’ 18-hit attack.

Luty (3-for-3) led WVC with three singles, three RBI and two runs; Stephens (2-for-4, two singles, two RBI, two runs), Pichardo (2-for-3, single, triple, three RBI, one run), David Rodriguez (2-for-3, single, triple, two RBI, two runs) and Jacob Kalusniak (2-for-2, single, double, three RBI, two runs) all added two hits.

Other Wabash Valley players with one hit were Watkins (1-for-2, single, two RBI, one run), Michael Rodriguez (1-for-2, single, one run), Bailey Montgomery (1-for-1, single, one run), Harris (1-for-4, double, one RBI, one run), Giroux (1-for-2, single, one RBI, one run), Trey Beckman (1-for-1, single, one run) and Sanchez (1-for-1, single, three runs). Jordaly Vasquez scored one run.

Malcolm Grady (6-2) pitched 3 1/3 innings for the victory. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Koren Thompson worked one relief inning, striking out two and walking one.

The Warriors host Olney Central in a GRAC doubleheader at 12 p.m. Tuesday.
