College notebook: Kavaliauskas earns MAAC rookie award
MAAC ROOKIE: Fairfield sophomore guard Aidas Kavaliauskas earned the MAAC Rookie of the Week award after playing an integral role in the Stags’ win over Niagara on Saturday. He posted his second straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lift the the men’s basketball team to a 104-85.
Kavaliauskas also made two key shots that stopped Niagara’s comeback bid in the second half. After Niagara cut an 18-point deficit to six points, Kavaliauskas netted a pair of three-point field goals on back-to-back possessions that quickly doubled the Stags advantage back to 12 points. Fairfield would never lead by less than 10 points through the rest of the game. Kavaliauskas made five of eight shots from the floor and also added two rebounds, a block, and three steals in his game-high 37 minutes.??? Kavaiauskas has posted a double-double in each of his first two career starts, scoring 14 points with 10 assists against Marist on Jan.13.
The Stags host Rider on Tuesday night at 7 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport.
