St. Francis, Clarkson/Leigh punch tickets to state
NORFOLK — A balanced attack led Class D-2, No. 5 Humphrey St. Francis to a four-set win Thursday over Wynot in the D2-2 district final to send the Flyers to their 22nd state tournament.
St. Francis turned a fast start into a 25-11, 25-16, 17-25, 25-18 win over the Blue Devils.
Four Flyers had between seven and 10 kills, led by sophomore Caitlin Jarosz with 10. Logan Wemhoff finished with nine kills, three aces and 17 digs while Bridget McPhillips added eight kills, three aces, a block, 15 digs and 29 assists from her setter position. Tara Foltz had seven kills for St. Francis.
The D-2 state tournament begins Thursday in Lincoln.

WAHOO — Lourdes Central Catholic won the first set of the D1-2 district final Thursday at Wahoo High School, but No. 7 Clarkson/Leigh roared back to take three straight sets to clinch a state tournament appearance.
Clarkson/Leigh won 15-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20 to earn its first trip to state since the schools combined for sports. Separately, Leigh hadn’t been to the state tournament since 2005 while Clarkson hadn’t qualified since 1989.
The Class D-1 state tournament begins Thursday in Lincoln.
