Bozievich voted county board chairman
Jay Bozievich will serve as chairman of the Lane County Board of Commissioners in 2018.
Commissioners unanimously selected Bozievich to succeed Pat Farr as board chairman on Tuesday, after Farr held the position all of last year.
The position is largely symbolic. Board chairmen oversee commissioners’ weekly public meetings, ensuring the commissioners move in a timely manner from one agenda item to another. Chairmen also often make public statements representing the board on county issues.
The commissioners also unanimously picked Sid Leiken to serve as vice chair, succeeding Bozievich in that position. The vice chairman fills in if the chairman is unable to attend a meeting or recuses himself from an issue over possible conflicts of interest. Farr recused himself from discussions related to October’s strike by more than 500 county employees because his son worked for the county and was represented by the striking union.
Bozievich, who represents west Lane County, also served as board chairman in 2015. Former commissioner Faye Stewart was chairman in 2016; Farr was chairman in 2014; and Leiken was chairman in 2012 and 2013. Commissioner Pete Sorenson hasn’t served as chairman or vice chairman in that time, according to past commissioner meeting agendas and minutes.
