Downtown Stamford Starbucks store set to close

October 18, 2018

Starbucks plans to permanently close Monday its store at 96 Broad St., next to the Ferguson Library, spelling an end to its only company-operated establishment on a street level in downtown Stamford.

“We would like to thank you for being part of our store community; you are the heart of who we are at Starbucks,” District Manager Gretchen Bartkus wrote in a letter posted inside the store. “It has been a great pleasure to connect with you. We are very thankful to have played a role in your daily routine and that you have shared these moments of your life with us.”

Baristas at the Broad Street store would be re-assigned to other Starbucks locations.

Bartkus’ letter did not explain why the store was closing, but its shutdown follows Starbucks’ announcement in June that it would close in its next fiscal year about 150 stores. The Seattle-based company plans to focus less on areas already concentrated with Starbucks outlets and slow licensed stores’ growth in favor of more establishments in “underpenetrated” markets.

Factoring in closures, the company increased its store total by 511 in the past quarter. It operates 28,720 establishments worldwide.

At the same time, the company said it would also broaden its digital initiatives. It reported in June that it had added about 2 million active Starbucks Rewards member in the past year.

“Our recent performance does not reflect the potential of our exceptional brand, and is not acceptable,” Starbucks President and CEO Kevin Johnson said in a statement in June. “We must move faster to address the more rapidly changing preferences and needs of our customers.”

Amid its push for more growth, Starbucks posted record revenues and profits in its past quarter. Total sales rose 11.5 percent year over year, to about $6.3 billion.

In downtown Stamford, Stamford also operates a store in the Stamford Town Center mall. Neighboring cafes serving Starbucks-branded coffee are housed in the Barnes & Noble store at the mall, the Target store at 21 Broad St., and, across the street, in the University of Connecticut’s building at 1 University Place.

Other company-run Starbucks stores in Stamford are located at 288 West Ave., by I-95’s Exit 6; at the Ridgeway Shopping Center, at 2139 Summer St., and in the High Ridge Shopping Center, at 1079 High Ridge Road.
