Shower Cleaner Recalled

October 8, 1999

WASHINGTON (AP) _ A maker of shower cleaner is voluntarily recalling 230,000 bottles of Scrub Free Daily Shower Cleaner and Scrub Free Daily Shower Spray because of possible bacteria contamination.

Benckiser Consumer Products Inc. of Greenwich, Conn., said Thursday that the cleaners may contain a bacteria that could cause respiratory or similar infections in people with chronic health problems or weak immune systems.

The recalled products are white or clear plastic, 32-ounce spray bottles; and 64-ounce refill bottles. Benckiser said supermarkets, drug and discount stores sold the affected products from May 1999 through Oct. 4, 1999.

Customers who purchased these products should wash their shower enclosures with one part vinegar and two parts vinegar, but save their purchased bottles for information they will need to provide the company hotline. The company can be reached at 800-286-9055 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday to receive a free replacement coupon.

Cleaners purchased after Oct. 4 and Scrub Free Mildew Remover and Scrub Free Soap Scum Remover are not included in the recall.
