Man arrested at northern border admits skimming scheme
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A man caught with credit card skimming devices at the northern border has pleaded guilty to bank fraud.
Federal prosecutors in Buffalo said Monday that 35-year-old Jorge Alvarez faces up to 30 years in prison.
Alvarez, a Cuban native living in Miami, was arrested while trying to enter the United States from Canada at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo. Investigators say he had 16 internal gas pump skimming devices and other items he used to steal bank card information from drivers who stopped for gas. Authorities say about 131 customers were victimized.
Alvarez is scheduled to be sentenced in August.
