Man sentenced to life in prison for killing estranged wife

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for fatally shooting his estranged wife in a hotel parking lot hours after the funeral of their son.

KTVO reports that Bethany Wellman said at the hearing that the November 2016 death of her mother, Echo Welte, at the hands of her adopted father, Danny Welte, had torn her family apart.

“I feel like it’s ruined a lot,” she said. “It’s been tough and it’s been a struggle for all of us.”

Danny Welte was convicted in February of second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

The Weltes were divorcing when their son, Danny Welte Jr., committed suicide. Witnesses testified that hours after his funeral, Danny Welte came to a Kirksville hotel and stopped in the parking lot near his wife.

The Weltes argued for several hours inside her vehicle before a bystander saw the vehicle’s lights flashing and ran to the car, according to evidence. The killing was caught on the hotel’s security cameras.

Danny Welte fled the scene but was arrested hours later.
