Red Wing Hispanic festival gets boost from state grant

June 2, 2018

RED WING — Red Wing’s Hispanic Heritage Festival will get a cash boost this year, courtesy of a Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Grant of $10,000.

“We wanted to do a little more, so we went for it, and we got it,” said Lucy Richardson, executive director of the Hispanic Outreach Program of Goodhue County, which runs the festival. The organization received an Arts & Cultural Heritage Grant of $8,000 last year, but sought the maximum of $10,000 this time. The budget for the event runs to about $15,000, Richardson said.

The grants are awarded by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council.

The festival will be held this year on Sept. 16 at Red Wing’s Central Park, where it moved last year after previously being held at the Red Wing farmers market. “I think we’ll stick with Central Park,” Richardson said. “It’s right in the center of the city, a good downtown location.”

The festival includes live music, food, art, cultural displays and kids’ activities. A fashion show and historic photo display will be added this year, Richardson said. “We started with the planning already in January,” she said.

About 300 people attended last year’s festival. Organizers hope to draw from a wider geographic area, especially from Rochester’s larger Hispanic community.

“We want to open it up to everybody,” Richardson said. “It is a way to help the Latino community preserve their culture. It’s an opportunity to learn from each other.”

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. According to the 2010 census, about 1,500 people of Hispanic heritage live in Goodhue County, Richardson said. “I’m sure there will be a lot more in the next census,” she said.
