Elks to honor and retire flags Saturday

June 15, 2018 GMT

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Florence Elks Lodge #1020 will conduct a “Flag Day” ceremony followed by a flag retirement at 4 p.m. Saturday at its lodge.

The lodge is located at 2220 West Jody Road in Florence.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is the first fraternal body to require formal observance of “Flag Day.” In July of 1908, the Grand Lodge of this Order, at Dallas, Texas, assembled and provided for the annual nationwide observance of “Flag Day” on the 14th of June in each year by making it mandatory upon each Lodge of the Order.

This ceremony is open to the public.
