Fire displaces 19 from Madison apartment building on Far East Side
A fire Sunday morning displaced 19 residents of an apartment building on the Far East Side, the Madison Fire Department said.
A resident of the apartments in the 4700 block of Cottage Grove Road reported smoke inside the building around 6:05 a.m., the Fire Department said.
People were already evacuating and smoke alarms were going off when firefighters arrived, according to the Fire Department. A Metro Transit bus was brought to the scene to keep the residents warm.
A fire in a second-floor apartment was found and quickly extinguished, the Fire Department said.
The cause of the fire was not yet known, and no damage estimate was available.
The Red Cross was helping those displaced from their homes before an expected snowstorm Sunday night and a string of days of dangerously cold temperatures.
