Rodgers Leads Men’s Decathlon
AUSTIN (AP) _ Trafton Rodgers led the men’s decathlon after the first day of competition Wednesday in the Texas Relays at the University of Texas.
Rodgers, an unattached athlete, accumulated his 4,230-point total after five events by winning the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.6 seconds. He also won the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, one-quarter inch.
Ricky Barker, of team Asics, was second with a 4,177 total. He placed second in the 100 (10.73), and the long jump (23-11).
Unattached athlete Kelly Blair led the women’s heptathlon after the first day with 3,668 points in the first four events.
Blair won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.52. She also placed first in the shot put, with a toss of 44-9.
Akron’s Christi Smith was second with a 3,496 total. She won the 200 with a time of 24.18.
