Landfill solar array to help communities, environment
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) — Vermont officials say a new solar array at a landfill will save communities thousands.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports officials gathered Thursday at the Windham Solid Waste Management office to celebrate the solar project. Encore Renewable Energy helped secure a permit for the project while Sky Solar will operate the 5-megawat array.
The nearly 16,000 solar panels sit on top of a capped landfill.
Windham Solid Waste Management District Board of Supervisors chairwoman Michelle Cherrier says net-metering customers should save about $375,000 combined.
Encore Renewable Energy CEO Chad Farrell says “it would require about 3,000 tons of coal annually to create the same amount of electric capacity” the solar array will create.
Cherrier says state legislation passed in 2014 helped pave the way for the project.
