2017 All-Area Girls Cross Country Teams
Karlie Callahan, Jr., Shelley
Best time: 19:01.1
The lowdown: Callahan only competed in six meets for Shelley in 2017, but improved as the year went on. The junior opened the season with a 20:13.6 at the Bob Firman Invitational and closed it with a personal-best 19:01.1 at the 3A state meet — good enough to win the individual title and lead the Russets to a fourth-place team finish.
Josi Kelsey, Soph., Bear Lake
Best time: 19:27.2
The lowdown: Kelsey finished her sophomore season the same way she did a year earlier — with a 2A state championship. Kelsey ran three of her final four races in under 20 minutes and notched four victories, including at state and the 2A District 5 championship.
Jill Parry, Sr., Highland
Best time: 19:41.4
The lowdown: Parry capped her Highland cross country career with multiple top-five finishes, including fifth place at the 155-runner Bob Firman Invitational in September. Parry ran a season-best 19:41.36 at Bob Firman, and ran a 20:21.3 at the 5A state meet — her best time in three appearances at state.
Anna Sanford, Sr., Highland
Best time: 19:45.7
The lowdown: Sanford was Highland’s most consistent runner this season, finishing eight of nine races in under 21 minutes. She won the Pocatello City Meet, took sixth at the 5A District 5-6 meet and capped her career with a season-best 19:45.7 at state, where she finished 31st.
Paige Shumway, Soph., Preston
Best time: 19:40.6
The lowdown: Shumway was one of the top runners in 4A District 5-6, finishing 15th or better nine times. Shumway picked up wins at the season-opening Terry Jones Invitational and October’s Preston Invitational, where she ran a personal-best 19:40.6. Shumway ended the season with a ninth-place finish at the 4A state meet.
Jenna Gaines, Fr., Soda Springs
Best time: 20:13.5
The lowdown: Gaines started strong as a freshman, picking up six top-10 finishes and taking 18th at the competitive Bob Firman Invitational.
Kathryne McCullough, Sr., Soda Springs
Best time: 20:21.7
The lowdown: McCullough finished her prep career the way it started: with a 2A state championship. The senior finished in the top 10 four times, including a runner-up finish at the 2A District 5 meet and ninth place at state.
Elana Sanford, Soph., Highland
Best time: 19:44.7
The lowdown: Sanford got better as the season wore on, improving her time from 22:16 at the start of the season to a personal-best 19:44.7 at the 5A state meet.
Tenleigh Smith, Fr., Blackfoot
Best time: 19:29.1
The lowdown: Smith burst onto the scene with a fifth-place finish at the season-opening Bronco Classic, and ended her debut campaign with a 12th-place finish at the 4A state meet. Smith also notched three sub-20 minute races.
Kate White, Jr., Soda Springs
Best time: 19:46.3
The lowdown: White was key in leading Soda Springs to a 12th consecutive 2A state championship, registering six top-five finishes. She was the Cardinals’ top finisher at the state meet in fourth place.
