Ohio reports another strong walleye hatch in Lake Erie

December 23, 2018

SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) — Ohio’s wildlife agency says the outlook for walleye fishing on Lake Erie is bright.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says its surveys by fish scientists in Lake Erie’s central basin are revealing an “exceptional” walleye hatch this year.

Eric Weimer of the state’s Sandusky Fisheries Research Station says fishing in the lake has been good recently and that seems likely to continue.

He tells the Sandusky Register that this year’s massive walleye hatch will carry the fishery for the next decade and a half.

The state says its surveying shows that young-of-the-year walleye catch rates are the highest recorded in the past 20 years in central basin.
