25th anniversary of the iconic film ‘The Bodyguard’

November 25, 2017 GMT

Originally released on Nov. 17, 1992, “The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album,” — co-executive produced by Whitney Houston and Clive Davis — was the first album verified by SoundScan to sell more than 1 million copies in a single week, won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, has sold more than 45 million copies worldwide (and is certified 17 time platinum in the U.S. by the RIAA) and is the top-selling soundtrack album of all-time.

Driven in part by Houston’s cover of the Dolly Parton-penned “I Will Always Love You,” “The Bodyguard” soundtrack became of one of the best-selling albums of any genre in history and marked the singer’s debut as a movie star.

The release of “The Bodyguard” in the midst of her 10-album career span solidified Houston as an iconic songstress until her sudden death in 2012 at age 48. The late vocalist’s legendary status is reconfirmed with the recent 25th anniversary release of “Whitney Houston — I Wish You Love: More From The Bodyguard.”

According to Legacy Records’ press release, highlights from the album include an alternate mix of “I Will Always Love You,” which features a spoken word intro of Whitney as Rachel Marron, an a capella version of “Jesus Loves Me,” which has never been heard before and a live recording from The Bodyguard World Tour 1993-1995 of “Run To You,” which Whitney rarely performed. Also included are film and live versions of “I Will Always Love You,” “I Have Nothing,” “Queen of The Night” and more.

“Anyone that worked with her knew she always strived for herself and others to be the best that they could be,” wrote Pat Houston, president of the Estate of Whitney E. Houston.

“Music wasn’t about singing better than the next person, but impacting someone’s life with a message in song. Whitney simply loved telling a story with her voice and did it well. As a young girl, she had a vision of what she wanted to become, singing in front of the mirror with a broomstick in her basement at home; before long, she was selling out prominent venues around the world.”

“Whitney Houston — I Wish You Love: More From The Bodyguard” is now available on CD and digital configurations, as well as a limited edition two-LP purple vinyl edition (to be released at a later date.)
