WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (AP) — A Rhode Island man charged with being under the influence of drugs and alcohol and causing a fatal crash in western Massachusetts has been held without bail.

The North Adams Transcript (http://bit.ly/1bcNNya ) reports that William Lowe of Pawtucket, R.I., pleaded not guilty Monday to charges including motor vehicle homicide by operating under the influence and speeding.

Police say the 34-year-old Lowe had an open beer and was speeding in his SUV at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday in Williamstown when he crossed the center line and struck a car driven by 64-year-old Lawrence George of Pownal, Vt.

George died at the scene. Lowe and a passenger were hospitalized.

Lowe says he skidded on ice.

Lowe was held on $25,000 bail in the Williamstown case, but had bail revoked for a prior OUI arrest.
