Defense contractor to add 75 workers in $50M expansion

March 26, 2019

SHANNON, Miss. (AP) — A defense contractor is again expanding in Mississippi, with plans to invest $50 million and add 75 jobs over five years.

General Atomics announced Tuesday that it will add 100,000 square feet (9,300 sq. meters) to its existing complex near Tupelo.

San Diego-based General Atomics says it’s adding a new product, but didn’t say what it would make.

Mississippi Development Authority spokeswoman Tammy Craft says General Atomics will get a $1 million state grant to aid in building renovations and $500,000 for workforce training. Lee County is expected to grant property tax breaks worth $2.4 million over 10 years.

General Atomics currently has more than 300 workers in Shannon. New workers are expected to make $41,600 a year, on average.

The company has announced four expansions in Shannon since 2013.
