‘L.A. Law’ Star Jimmy Smits Pleads No Contest

November 26, 1987

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ ″L.A. Law″ star Jimmy Smits on Wednesday pleaded no contest to disturbing the peace and was given 1 1/2 years of unsupervised probation in an alleged attack on a police officer, officials said.

Municipal Court Commissioner Beverly Moseley also fined the 32-year-old actor $150 and ordered him to perform 50 hours of community service, said Ted Goldstein, a spokesman for the city attorney’s office.

Smits, who plays the earring-wearing defense attorney Victor Sifuentes on the NBC series, did not appear in court; the plea was entered by his attorney, Terry Bird.

Smits originally was charged with battery on a police officer who had gone to his apartment to investigate complaints of shouting Aug. 10, but the charge was dropped because of conflicting statements from witnesses, Goldstein said.

Smits’ live-in girlfriend, Wanda De Jesus, 29, on Wednesday pleaded no contest to disturbing the peace and to falsely identifying herself to a police officer, Goldstein said.

She was given 1 1/2 years of unsupervised probation, fined $250 and ordered to serve 75 hours of community service, Goldstein said.

″We view the dismissal of these charges as support of our earlier claim that neither of us has attacked a police officer nor otherwise been guilty,″ Smits and Ms. De Jesus said in a joint statement.
