October 9, 2017

Four games in Ann Arbor Mich., over the weekend resulted in four victories for the Greenwich High School boys water polo team.

The Cardinals registered victories over Ann Arbor Pioneer, Rockford, Okemos and Ann Arbor Skyline at Skyline High School.

In their 19-6 win over Ann Arbor Pioneer, junior Niki de la Sierra recorded four goals, while senior captain Brian O’Leary had a hat trick. O’Leary, senior captain Mac Baxter, junior Tegan D’Agostino and sophomore Charlie Clark each had two assists apiece in the winning effort.

Junior Kyle Laufenberg was strong in goal for the Cardinals, making eight saves, to go along with two steals and two assists. D’Agostino’s four goals propelled GHS past previously undefeated Rockford, 9-8. de la Sierra tallied twice, while Laufenberg made five saves and three steals for the Cardinals (12-4). Rockford is the defending Michigan state champion.

Plavoukos had two goals, including the go-ahead tally with just over a minute remaining in Greenwich’s 6-5 triumph against Okemos. Greenwich stood strong defensively, holding their opponent scoreless on its final three possessions.

Greenwich’s third one-goal win came when it edged previously undefeated Ann Arbor Skyline, 10-9. D’Agostino, O’Leary, Plavoukos and de la Sierra scored two goals apiece. Baxter had one goal and two assists. D’Agostino and de la Sierra led GHS with nine goals over the four games.

“It was nice to win some close games,” Greenwich first-year coach Jimmy Ramaley said. “We’ve lost a couple of one-goal games back home, so to be able to finish these games off was great. We beat the three best high school teams in Michigan in one day. Our sophomores and freshmen really stepped up, which will really help us going forward.”

Up next for Greenwich is its 43rd Cardinal Tournament, which it hosts Friday and Saturday. The Cardinals are the defending champions at their own tournament.
