Mom, boyfriend arrested in case of boy who shot himself
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A woman and her boyfriend are facing charges in the death of a Florida boy who shot himself.
The Florida Times-Union reports Donna Crump-Piedra was arrested Wednesday on two counts of child neglect and two counts of culpable negligence for the Feb 11 death of her 2-year-old son Jayden Piedra.
Crump-Piedra’s boyfriend Lephabion Griggs owned the gun that Jayden and his older brother were playing with. He was arrested Feb. 16 on culpable negligence and improperly storing a firearm charges.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Lt. Craig Waldrup said the boys found the gun while the adults were asleep. He says the tragedy would have been avoided “if they had locked up that gun.”
Crump-Piedra’s bond is $300,000. Griggs’ bond was set at $50,000. Jail records don’t list lawyers for them.
