Charges against city officer mulled

May 2, 2019

The Allen County prosecutor’s office will decide whether to file criminal charges against a Fort Wayne police officer following an investigation, city police said Wednesday.

The police department said it will not identify the officer, who Indiana State Police said was being investigated on suspicion of battery.

“Our internal investigation will commence after the prosecutor’s office makes its decision as to whether criminal charges are appropriate,” Sofia Rosales-Scatena, Fort Wayne police spokeswoman, said Wednesday.

Last week, Sgt. Ron Galaviz, Indiana State Police spokesman, acknowledged that his department was investigating a Fort Wayne officer.

“The alleged incident occurred on March 23, and our investigator was assigned the case on April 4,” Galaviz said in an email April 25.

Rosales-Scatena said releasing the officer’s name could impede the judicial process.

“In an effort to have a transparent, unbiased and fair investigation, the Fort Wayne Police Department did request the Indiana State Police conduct the investigation into the allegation. Currently, this investigation has been turned over by the Indiana State Police to the Allen County Prosecutors Office for charging consideration,” Rosales-Scatena said.
