AMHERST, Mass. (AP) _ Rachel LeDuc’s last-minute goal lifted the University of Massachusetts women’s soccer team over the University of Connecticut 1-0 Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament.
UMass now advances to the final four, where the Minutewomen will meet the North Carolina Tarheels at a site to be announced.
After an evenly matched and scoreless first half, the Minutewomen scored the game’s only goal when freshman Rebecca Myers advanced the ball to LeDuc, who chipped it over rushing UConn goalkeeper Jill Gelfenbien. UConn’s Sue Stabache tried to stop the shot, but it ricocheted off her leg into the net.
It was the second time in two years that a last-minute goal by LeDuc helped the Minutewomen beat the Huskies in the NCAA tournament.
UMass goalkeeper Briana Scurry collected three saves while recording her fifth consecutive shutout and her 15th this season.
