‘Boot Camp for New Dads’ will provide answers for rookies

August 20, 2018

FLORENCE, S.C. — Young and soon-to-be fathers will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of fatherhood from experienced dads in the Pee Dee area.

“Boot Camp for New Dads,” a program presented by Man 2 Man Fatherhood Initiative, is designed for young and expectant fathers looking to “learn the ropes” of fatherhood.

The first workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Man 2 Man office at 1321 W. Evans St. Registration is $25 per dad and includes materials.

Deon Campbell, site director for Man 2 Man, said the program will link “rookie dads” with “veteran dads” in an effort to give them experience on how to raise a child and answer their questions.

“This is brand new -- it’s basically for new dads and first-time dads who are getting ready to make the leap into fatherhood,” Campbell said. “This is a three-hour workshop in which new dads can learn the basics and get rid of that anxiety and nervousness that may come with the unknowns.”

Campbell said the organization will host a workshop quarterly.

At the workshop, “veteran dads” will bring their own babies and share their stories on how they made the leap to fatherhood. Soon-to-be fathers will discuss and learn about several different issues surrounding parenthood, including handling a newborn, feeding and changing, calming a crying baby, how to balance work with being a dad and more.

“It’s a big piece that’s needed,” Campbell said. “They will gain information and become comfortable jumping into this fatherhood arena. They get to see veteran dads and hear their stories firsthand. They will be able to get their questions answered and be mentored. All my life, I learned from my father how to be a good dad. This workshop is definitely beneficial for soon-to-be dads as they become more prepared as a result.”

Man 2 Man was started with the goal of helping fathers become loving, caring and educated dads to their children and their families. The nonprofit organization started in 1999 and is one of six organizations across South Carolina that promote healthy family relationships through the “Fatherhood Initiative.”

Man 2 Man serves Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence and Marlboro counties. The organization has two facilities: one at 1321 W. Evans St. in Florence and another at 110 S. Parsonage St. in Bennettsville.
