Authorities: Paramedic stole painkiller from ambulances
GREENFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a central Indiana paramedic stole vials of the painkiller fentanyl from ambulances that were intended for patient use.
State police say 41-year-old Jason Howard of Fishers was arrested Monday on charges of theft and possession of narcotics in Hancock County.
He was ordered held without bond. Court records don’t list a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
An investigation started in May after a fire department discovered evidence that several vials of fentanyl had been tampered with. Investigators determined at least 34 vials were allegedly taken from departments in five Indiana counties since early 2018.
Police say Howard is believed to have replaced fentanyl with saline solution. The ambulance company conducted an internal audit and Howard lost his job. He could face charges in other counties.
