Hundreds mark Greek church centennial
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Several hundred former parishioners including Utah Supreme Court Justice Deno Himonas this week celebrated the 100th anniversary of a Greek Orthodox Church in Price, Utah.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2b88hLI) the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church was the cultural focal point for thousands of mining families in the early 1900s.
It was dedicated Aug. 15, 1916, when the area’s Greek population numbered around 3,000.
About 120 Greek families attend the church today.
Himonas said he attended Greek school and Sunday school at the historic church, and it remains a key part of his life.
