Lakeview softball gets first win of season

August 22, 2018 GMT

The third time proved to be the charm for the Lakeview High School softball team on Saturday.

The Vikings started out 0-2 in a Lincoln tournament, however, showed steady improvement throughout the day and beat Polk County, 6-4, in their third and final contest of the weekend.

“We need to remember what it felt like to win that game, and chase that feeling,” Vikings head coach Erica Zywiec said.

The Vikings started out the morning with a 14-2 loss to Platteview. They didn’t let this get them down though, as they played South Sioux City in their next game and lost by only narrow margin, 7-6.

Lakeview needs to get better offensively, the coach said, noting her team was outhit 22-16 in three games.

“Our hitting struggled a little,” Zywiec said. “We struggled to find some holes and to get solid hits.”

These early season contests are a chance to try people at different positions, according to Zywiec.

“Throughout the day we moved people around to try to find what worked. I think that had an effect on the games,” Zywiec said.

After getting that first victory, Zywiec said she hopes that the momentum will carry over into their next game, a road battle set for Thursday against Centennial (1-1).

Lakeview used three pitchers during the day – Caitlin Buck, Kelli Schoch and Kassidy Soulliere. Zywiec mentioned how well the three of them worked together during the tournament.

“Our pitchers, all three of them, they’re just really working well together,” Zywiec said. “They’re working well together as a team.”

Soulliere looked especially impressive in the Vikings win over Polk County, in which she pitched all six innings. She gave up five hits and had six strikeouts, securing the victory for the Vikings.

Emma Williams went 6-of-9 from the plate and scored five runs on Saturday.
