La Panaderia, gastropub, burger spot planned for retail development near The Rim

May 1, 2019

La Panaderia, Thirsty Lion and Burgerim are among the restaurants opening next summer at a new retail development near The Rim shopping center.

Redlands Grill, a chain owned by J. Alexander’s Holdings, is also coming to the center.

The 19-acre project, called La Cantera Heights, includes the northwest and southwest tracts off of La Cantera Parkway and Interstate 10. The southern section encompasses 35,000 square feet of retail space, while the other slice includes a 20,000-square-foot multitenant building with a 7,000-square-foot restaurant.

The development is across from The Rim.

Austin-based CSW Development is partnering with USAA Real Estate on the project, and the groups broke ground on the first phase Wednesday.

The development is fairly small and features entertainment and service-oriented restaurants and stores — a reflection of the changes happening within retail, said Barry Haydon, senior vice president at JLL. The real estate firm is handling the leasing.

“It’s not dependent on big-box stores,” he said. “It’s focused on daily needs.”

CSW and USAA are targeting first-to-market businesses, such as Thirsty Lion, a gastropub and grill chain based in Portland, Ore. The company’s restaurant at La Cantera Heights is its first in San Antonio.

La Cantera Heights is also accessible from the Leon Creek Trail and may be a draw for bicyclists and runners using the trail, Haydon added. There will be a patio and other outdoor areas at the center.

“It’s a place where people will want to go and hang out,” he said.
