Officials identify man shot, killed by South Carolina police
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Officials have released the name of a man who died after being shot by police in South Carolina who say he refused to drop a knife as he approached.
The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said 29-year-old John David Manning of Pacolet died Wednesday at Spartanburg Medical Center.
Police Maj. Art Littlejohn said officers were working a wreck in front of a convenience store around 4 a.m. Wednesday when a man not involved in the accident came out of the building with a knife.
Littlejohn said the man refused to drop the knife and stop. State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said an officer tried unsuccessfully to stun the man and then shot him.
The officer was not hurt.
The officers at the scene are on leave while SLED investigates.
