Man sentenced to Florida prison for airline stowaway attempt
KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — A homeless man has been sentenced to four years in a Florida prison for trying to stow away on a Delta Air Lines flight in 2015.
According to a statement from the Monroe County State Attorney’s Office, Circuit Court Judge Mark Jones said at Thursday’s sentencing hearing that 35-year-old James Crabtree’s actions were “reckless, criminal, selfish.”
A jury convicted Crabtree in May of burglary of a conveyance, a third-degree felony. Crabtree has been jailed since his arrest at Key West International Airport and will get credit for time served.
Crabtree was arrested June 4, 2015, after a Delta employee found him in the forward storage bin of the commercial airplane. Surveillance video showed him walking toward the plane hours earlier.
Crabtree’s attorney said his client suffered from mental illness.
