JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ Dalton Hilliard ran for touchdowns of 1 and 4 yards and 16th-ranked Louisiana State used a stingy defense to blank Mississippi 14-0 in a Southeastern Conference football contest Saturday.

Running its record to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference, LSU scored on consecutive possessions late in the first quarter and early in the second, then let its defense take over.

Ole Miss, 3-4-1 and 1-3, four times got inside LSU territory, including to the Tiger 3-yard line in the final seven minutes, but couldn’t score.

Mississippi didn’t allow LSU a first down in the second half until less than six minutes remained, but couldn’t put any points on the board as the Rebels had two passes picked off and were hurt by penalties. In three quarters, Mississippi had only 48 yards total offense.

Louisiana State capitalized on a fumble to set up its first touchdown. Willie Goodloe fumbled at the Rebel 2 and Mickey Harris recovered. Two plays later, Hilliard scored from the 1.

On its next possession, the Tigers marched 69 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown. Quarterback Jeff Wickersham threw for 49 yards in the drive, including 20 yards to Rogie Magee and 16 to Wendell Davis.
