A Chicago man is in custody in Dane County Jail following a multi-jurisdictional arrest on Interstate-39 on Thursday afternoon.

Howard Lovelady, 46, was wanted in connection to a suspected armed robbery on the 1100 block of South Thompson Street in which, according to Madison police, Lovelady and the alleged victim had known each other and Lovelady had stolen drugs at gunpoint.

Dispatch requested aid for the Wisconsin State Patrol in the pursuit of a suspected vehicle on northbound Interstate-39 around 2 p.m. Less than a half hour later Lovelady pulled the vehicle over near a rest stop north of Poynette. Lovelady exited the vehicle and backed toward officers to surrender. A single passenger was also taken into custody by Dane County authorities.

Traffic on the interstate was brought to a halt, backing up several miles during the arrest with over two dozen officers on the scene including Wisconsin State Patrol and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

After a search of the vehicle officers recovered a firearm and cocaine. Lovelady is facing charges of armed robbery, possession of a handgun by a felon and possession of cocaine.
