Schlomer’s game-winning jumper lifts Phoenix over Ripon
RIPON — Luke Schlomer hit the game-winning shot from 10 feet out on the baseline with 1.4 seconds to play and the Luther Prep boys basketball team rallied from an early 10-point deficit to top host Ripon 69-68 in a nonconference game on Tuesday.
Ripon’s Luke Rogers made a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to put the Tigers ahead 68-67.
Ripon led 11-1 early in the first half but Luther Prep’s Micah Kieselhorst made four 3-pointers before halftime to cut the lead to one.
Neither team led by more than four points in the second half and Malachi Roeseler and Joel Schewe both made important perimeter shots for the Phoenix in the victory.
“In the second half we got some steals for easy buckets,” Luther Prep head coach Nate Kieselhorst said. “Micah had a nice game ... Malachi and Joel both hit critical three-pointers in the second half.”
Kieselhorst tallied 24 points and made five three-pointers on the night. Roeseler added 12 for Luther Prep (3-2).
Ripon (2-4) presented Luther Prep with a 1-3-1 defensive alignment and 2-3 zone scheme that kept the team in check offensively early on.
In the second half, Luther Prep forced turnovers and scored easily in transition to rally back.
Luther Prep’s Joel Schewe scored all nine of his points from behind the arc and Nathan de Galley notched eight. Schlomer finished with six points and shot 0-for-7 from the field in the first half.
“Nathan de Galley had some nice drives,” coach Kieselhorst said.
“Paul Frick did a nice job of penetrating. Alex (Lawrence) did a great job on defense guarding Ripon’s best player Max Beuthin.”
Despite Ripon shooting 50 percent from the field and outrebounding the Phoenix 33-17, Luther Prep collected a hard-fought road victory.
Ripon’s Beuthin supplied 24 points and Hunter Auchtung contributed 16. Rogers finished with 10 points.
Luther Prep travels to play Cambridge on Friday.
