Deer soccer lands two Most Valuable Players

With two players capturing specialty awards and head coach Jerry Hurtado collecting co-Coach of the Year honors, Deer Park’s varsity boys soccer team had plenty of reason to celebrate the recent announcement of the 21-6A all-district team.

In all, 11 players off the state playoff squad that reached the third round of the state playoffs, were named to either First Team, Second Team or honorable mention.

The Offensive MVP went to Deer Park’s Willy Lopez, while the Defensive MVP was presented to teammate Benny Moreno. Completing the look at the specialty awards, the 21-6A MVP went to North Shore’s Rene Tello, the Goalkeeper MVP was presented to C.E. King’s Gerardo Sosa and the Newcomer of the Year Award went to Channelview’s Stephen Calderon. Also named co-Coach of the Year was North Shore’s Richard Hurtado.

From the group of first teamers, Deer Park players from every position landed on the list.

Goalkeeeper Michael Garcia was among the five honored on First Team as were midfielders Jerson Martinez, Herson Sandoval and Jose Villa plus defender Alejandro Lucatero.

From the Second Team list Deer Park was again represented at every position. This time, it was the defenders leading the way as the trio of Diego Espinoza, Freddy Lomeli and Damian Caballero were selected for their strong play.

Fabian Romero was Deer Park’s representative on honorable mention.
