Shooting at truck results in charges
The officer was investigating a hit-and-run crash in the 3300 block of McCormick Avenue when she heard three loud gunshots to the east, then saw a red truck with an attached snow plow racing by.
The driver started waving his arms to get the officer’s attention and pointed to a gold Chevrolet Cruze following behind Monday night, according to court documents.
“They’re chasing us and trying to shoot us!” the driver of the truck shouted at Officer Susan Ulrich.
The truck driver scooted in front of the police car while the Chevrolet Cruz went around the truck and on to Birchwood Avenue.
A witness identified the Chevrolet Cruze’s driver and the driver’s brother who was a passenger and said that a third man, Cristian Nevarez, 19, of the 3500 block of Raymond Avenue, was leaning out the rear passenger-side window while he fired three shots at the truck with a pistol.
The witness said he knew the three men in the Cruze from the neighborhood.
Three minutes later, Ulrich located the Cruze and noticed several shell casings inside the car in plain sight.
Nevarez and the two other men were found inside the home where the car was parked.
The Chevrolet’s driver confirmed that Nevarez was shooting from inside the car toward the truck, police said. Nevarez was charged with criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon. He was being held at the Allen County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail.
