Colchester Police say they caught a car thief

November 25, 2016 GMT

COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Police say they captured a car thief after he was spotted rifling through another vehicle.

Colchester Police say at about 1 p.m. Thursday, a resident on Ira Allen Court spotted a stranger in her garage going through her car.

Police responded and launched a search for the suspect. That’s when they found a car nearby that had been stolen from South Burlington. Evidence in that vehicle identified Misbah Karim, 31, who they found a short distance away.

They say Karim has broken into and stolen other vehicles, too. He’s charged with burglary and operating without owner’s consent.

Police say breaking into vehicles is becoming more common.

“Not just this individual, but we have had repeated complaints about property being taken out of cars, as well as keys taken that were left in ignitions,” Colchester Police Cpl. Edward Fournier said.

Colchester Police encourage residents to take their keys and valuables out of cars and to lock the doors.
