Lighting fixture firm announces expansion, 180 new jobs
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — An artisan lighting fixture designer and manufacturer says the company is expanding its operation in South Carolina with a $10.7 million investment that will create about 180 jobs.
News outlets report the Urban Electric Co. announced an expansion that includes a new facility that will serve at the company’s headquarters and showroom.
The facility will be adjacent to Urban Electric’s North Charleston campus where custom, made-to-order lighting fixtures are produced.
CEO Dave Dawson says Charleston has an “abundance of talented artisans” that keeps the business “pushing forward.”
Dawson started the company in 2003. He couldn’t find custom lanterns for a house he was renovating, so he made his own.
The expansion is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
