‘God of War’ director to keynote PAX South ’19

Kratos would be proud. Next year’s big PAX South video game festival in San Antonio will host “God of War” director Cory Barlog for its opening “Storytime” keynote.

PAX South runs Jan. 18-20, 2019, at the Convention Center.

Barlog has made quite the mark in the video gaming industry with his “War” work. In addition to helming one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2018, Barlog also served as lead animator on the original 2005 “God of War,” and won a BAFTA for his writing on the 2007 sequel, “God of War II,” which he directed.

The new “God of War” recasts series protagonist Kratos in an unforgiving Norse wilderness, where the burly “Ghost of Sparta” must hack and slash through myriad threats while protecting and mentoring his young son, Atreus. The review aggregator Metacritic has more than 100 positive critic reviews (none negative or mixed) for the reboot, and lists “God of War” as the top PlayStation 4 game of 2018.

“Doing a sequel to a beloved game is a unique challenge, and so is rebooting a franchise for a modern audience — Cory Barlog has done both,” PAX co-founder Jerry Holkins said in a news release. “We’re overjoyed to have him join us at PAX South. If I get the chance, I’m gonna tell him about this place I know in San Antonio where they make the guacamole with Orange Juice instead of Lime. It sounds crazy, but it works.”

PAX, or Penny Arcade Expo, celebrates all aspects of gaming culture, from video games and virtual reality to tabletop games and other unplugged diversions. Attendees enjoy hands-on access to the latest games, along with panels, concerts, esports tournaments and other activities.

PAX South launched in San Antonio in 2015. Other PAX shows include PAX West in Seattle, PAX East in Boston, PAX Aus in Melbourne, and PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia.

PAX South 2019 tickets are now on sale, with three-day badges for $85 and single-day passes for $42.
