Johnston Medical Center employee seriously injured after being stabbed by patient
A hospital worker sustained life-threatening injuries after being stabbed by a patient Saturday evening.
Smithfield police said Connor Phillip Sullivan, 25, was waiting to be treated at Johnston Medical Center at about 6:15 p.m. when he assaulted hospital staff member Eric Hammond, 52, with a knife.
Sullivan fled on foot and was taken into custody by Smithfield police officers and Johnston County Sheriff’s Office deputies about two blocks away from the hospital, police said.
“There was an incident in our Smithfield emergency department this evening and one of our coworkers was injured. The safety of employees and patients is our top priority,” a Johnston Health spokesperson said in a statement. “Smithfield Police are investigating, and we’re cooperating fully. Our thoughts and prayers are with our employee and our employee’s family.”
Sullivan was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was being held at the Johnston County Jail under $60,000 secured bond Saturday night.
